Wild on purpose

Our gardening team in Campus Service seeks to reduce the use of energy for mowing the grass and correspondingly increase resource consumption for measures to improve the study environment, such as better outdoor living areas with increased visibility to "wild nature".

"In these green times, we must be very conscious of ensuring environmentally sound work processes. Wild on Purpose supports that we get a much greater diversity of plants and animals on the campus grounds, and at the same time, reduced machine use also means less emission of harmful gases and particles. Therefore, I can vouch for the way we look after our areas. We would like to support the green development in the Green Service Team at AAU.”

Rasmus Gamborg Kithim, Coordinator for green service and renovation

The wild areas are mowed 1-2 times a year and the cut material is collected. This mowing creates the opportunity for different flowering plants and thus better conditions for insects and other wildlife. On some larger grass areas, the insects are helped a little along the way by sowing various perennial flowering herbs, just as insect hotels are set up throughout Campus East

Falcon boxes have also been set up on some of the new tall buildings in the area. The hope is that peregrine falcons will move in, which can keep the seagulls in check.

In total, 45,000 sqm. of nature has been laid out with scrub, grass and wild herbs that are just allowed to grow by themselves, 25,000 sqm. with sown meadow seed mixture and 5,000 sqm. with wild slopes.

AAU is thus surrounded by a total of 75,000 sqm. of varied wild nature with mowed paths.
